A look back...

The Missing released its first episode in December 2020. In the four years since, we’ve covered more than seventy missing person cases, across the UK and Ireland. In the course of our work, we’ve spoken to hundreds of people, whose brave and unvarnished testimonies have shone a light on a grim phenomenon that is underreported in our communities. Some people are overwhelmed following lengthy battles with severe mental health issues, whilst others have found themselves under too much pressure, whether familial or financial. There are those who fall down the rabbit hole of addiction and there are people who simply found themselves in the wrong place, at the wrong time, in the wrong company. By revisiting some of the interviews we’ve recorded over the past four years we hope to illustrate just some of the myriad of reasons why people go missing and paint a picture of what life is like for the loved ones left behind to pick up the pieces. This podcast wouldn’t exist without them. For more information on this case, and every episode from every series visit to visit details of the most recent appeals - like the one you may have heard in this episode, please visit : If you or anyone you know is struggling with drug or alcohol addiction, you can find some useful information here: If you want to listen to The Missing COMPLETELY ad-free, and help to support the show, then please subscribe to our channel. The Missing + is your home for the very best in true-crime podcasts. Paul Carter

In this episode we bring you the odd case of Paul Carter, who disappeared during an overnight ferry crossing from Portsmouth to Brittany in April 2007. It wasn’t Paul’s first time making the trip to the port of Saint-Malo. He’d made the journey several times before for work reasons and was travelling with three colleagues on the night in question. He was last seen at around midnight but by the time the ferry docked the following morning, he had vanished without a trace. This episode hears from Paul’s mother Theresa. She explains how Paul’s disappearance created a bureaucratic nightmare, where the British police, the French authorities and the ferry operators all refused to take responsibility for his recovery, each pointing the finger at one another. Despite the lack of official support, Theresa has refused to give up hope and seventeen years later, she’s as determined as ever to solve the mystery of what happened to Paul. Dean Roche

In this episode we tell the story of Dean Roche, whose unexplained disappearance in Kilkenny, Ireland, has haunted his friends and family for the better part of a decade. Dean, 31, was very much at a crossroads in his life. He had a storied history of drug abuse and his habit had landed him in prison on several occasions but he very much wanted to turn things around. He had people in his life who depended on him, like his mother Geraldine and his son, Jamie but he was also his own worst enemy and frequently allowed himself to get into scenarios that made being someone they could rely on impossible. This episode hears from Dean’s friend Damien. The pair grew up together and were very close in their teenage years. Circumstances however, eventually caused them to drift apart. Damien brings us through the bizarre circumstances of Dean’s disappearance and explains why a promise made to Dean’s mother on her deathbed, means he’ll never stop searching for his friend. Phoenix Coldon - USA

In this episode we explore the strange disappearance of Phoenix Coldon, a 23 year old woman who was last seen driving away from her family home in Spanish Lake, Missouri, on a cold December afternoon, over a decade ago. Her whole life, Phoenix had been a model student as well as a talented musician and a decorated athlete to boot. She was raised by her loving parents Goldia and Lawrence, who sounded the alarm when Phoenix failed to return home without informing them of her plans, something very out of character for her. Phoenix’s vehicle was discovered mere hours after her disappearance, found abandoned at an intersection in East St Louis. No one has seen her ever since. As the investigation unfolded and police began speaking to Phoenix’s friends and family, it emerged that her personal life had been pretty turbulent in the months leading up to December 18th, 2011, the day she was last seen. Revelations about her romantic life and more importantly, her parentage, triggered some difficult conversations and left her in a vulnerable state. This episode hears from Claudia, Phoenix’s half-sister. She and Phoenix went their whole lives unaware of each other’s existence. In fact it wasn’t until a detective reached out to Claudia asking if she’d heard from Phoenix, that she learned she had a sister in the first place. Claudia walks us through the emotional whiplash of learning you have a sibling you never knew about, only to find out seconds later that they’re missing and explains how reading up on Phoenix’s case and doing some digging of her own, led her down a rabbit hole of discovery and intrigue, whose mysteries puzzle her to this day. Elizabeth’s alleged intention was to bring baby Gabriel to San Antonio, Texas, where, thanks to a loophole in state law, black market adoptions had become increasingly commonplace. Gabriel’s kidnapping made international news and sparked a manhunt spearheaded by the FBI. This episode hears from Gabriel’s great aunt Sandy. Following the untimely death of her sister, Sandy grew very close with her nephew Logan, so when Gabriel disappeared, she felt like it was her duty to do everything she possibly could to help. She brings us back to that fateful December day almost fifteen years ago, one that changed her family's lives forever and shares her thoughts about Elizabeth’s motivations and what she believes ultimately became of baby Gabriel. David Allen Clark - USA

In this episode we cover the tragic story of David Allen Clark, a 38 year old father of three whose car was found abandoned on the side of the road in Ocklawaha Florida in March 2023. No-one has seen or heard from him since. David had two great loves in his life, his family and the great outdoors. When he wasn’t doting on his kids, or talking literature with his mother, he could usually be found hiking his way through the trees and trails of Ocala National Forest. David would regularly embark on multi-day trips to Ocala, which explains why when he went missing, no-one was overly concerned at first. However, after several days without contact, they began to sense something was amiss. David was a very experienced hiker, one who knew the forest like the back of his hand. Other than a broken leg or a bear attack, his loved ones couldn’t imagine any scenario that would prevent him from returning home. When his vehicle was discovered, weeks after his disappearance, on a road running through the middle of Ocala, with its windows broken and its engine disabled, it created more questions than answers. This episode hears from David’s mother Gina. For the past year, she has spearheaded the search effort for her son, liaising with the authorities and coordinating volunteers. She talks about the days and weeks leading up to David’s disappearance, her theories about how his car came to its final resting place and why the forest is far, far more dangerous than it might first appear. Steven Durand

The first twenty-four hours of a missing person case are the most crucial. Its of vital importance that the authorities are working with the most accurate and up to date information in order to best direct their search efforts. Steven Durand was 31 when he went missing in Salford, in the North West of England. He was a mixed race man who walked with a limp, due to cerebral palsy. He had learning difficulties and mental health problems and was known to the local police as vulnerable. When the police first began searching for him, they mistakenly described him as white, later correcting the error but wasting valuable time and resources, looking for the wrong man. The last sighting of Steven was on October the 20th, 2018. He was captured on CCTV, wearing a black coat, and grey sweatpants, holding a can of fizzy drink that he then purchased. Salford was not an area Steven usually visited - his family have no idea why he was there. And they are yet to find out. Because that CCTV footage of Steven? It’s the last anyone ever saw of him.For more information on this case, and every episode from every series visit to visit details of the most recent appeals - like the one you may have heard in this episode, please visit : you want to listen to The Missing COMPLETELY ad-free, and help to support the show, then please subscribe to our channel. The Missing + is your home for the very best in true-crime podcasts. Charlene Downes

The disappearance of 14 year old schoolgirl Charlene Downes is one of the most notorious missing person cases in UK history. When Charlene vanished from Blackpool in the North West of England in November 2003, it resulted in a media frenzy, one monetized by tabloids cashing in on rumours and exploited for political purposes by the far-right. In the two decades since she vanished, countless theories have been suggested and dozens of suspects put forward, including members of Charlene’s own family. Very few missing person cases have received such coverage and scrutiny, yet, today, her loved ones are no closer to learning what happened to Charlene that night, than they were over twenty years ago.For more information on this case, and every episode from every series visit to visit details of the most recent appeals - like the one you may have heard in this episode, please visit : you want to listen to The Missing COMPLETELY ad-free, and help to support the show, then please subscribe to our channel. The Missing + is your home for the very best in true-crime podcasts. One night, whilst moored at the harbour, the pair went ashore for dinner and drinks. Their return journey, as they approached the dinghy that would get them back to the boat, was picked up by CCTV. Marshal Iwaasa

All of us have things that we associate with the people that we love: a smell of perfume they wear; a taste of something they might cook; a personal possession which they once gave us, or which once belonged to them. When it comes to her brother, Marshal, what pops into Paige Fogen’s head is his truck. Marshall drove a dark blue, 2009, GMC SIERRA pickup. It was his pride and joy. Marshall and Paige had driven thousands of miles together in it over the years. The siblings had gone through a lot, and the truck represented their journey together, both physical and emotional. So when the truck was found abandoned and burned out, by a group of hikers in a remote wooded area near Pemberton, Canada, Paige’s reaction was visceral. What was the truck doing there in the first place? And most importantly, where was its owner: her brother? That’s a question Paige has been trying to answer, for over four years now. Patricia Duncan

In many missing person’s cases, there’s a potential suspect, a clear motive, or a reason why the missing person might have wanted to vanish….But sometimes cases come along with none of that. Cases which feel like such a mystery, it’s hard to know what to think or where to start. Cases like that of 51 year old mother and grandmother, Patricia Duncan, who disappeared more than 20 years ago from a quiet seaside village on the coast of Scotland. From the outside Patricia lived a full life. She had 7 children and 11 grandchildren who she doted on. She was part of the local amateur dramatics group, and shared hobbies with her husband George. She had no known financial stresses, or mental health concerns. Yet, in 2002 as a huge storm raged outside, Patricia went missing from her home in the middle of the night. And no one in Patricia's family has heard from her since. For more information on this case, and every episode from every series visit to visit details of the most recent appeals - like the one you may have heard in this episode, please visit : you want to listen to The Missing COMPLETELY ad-free, and help to support the show, then please subscribe to our channel. The Missing + is your home for the very best in true-crime podcasts. Nancy Moyer

In season seven of The Missing, we’re examining, for the first time, missing person cases outside of the UK and Ireland. Today’s episode takes us to the United States, and the city of Tenino, Washington. That’s where Nancy Moyer, a 36 year old mother of two, who worked at the department of ecology, lived. When her daughter Sam thinks of her, she imagines Nancy smoking on the porch of her house. She recalls her enjoying a glass of wine in the kitchen. She remembers the feeling of her mother’s arms wrapped around her, after she’d crawled into her bed. But she also can’t forget the day, in March 2009, when she arrived at her mother’s place with her father and sister and Nancy wasn’t home. Her cigarettes were in their usual spot on the porch. Her wine glass was on the living room coffee table. The front door was ajar and Nancy Moyer was nowhere to be seen. Fifteen years later, Sam is still searching for her.For more information on this case, and every episode from every series visit to visit details of the most recent appeals - like the one you may have heard in this episode, please visit : you want to listen to The Missing COMPLETELY ad-free, and help to support the show, then please subscribe to our channel. The Missing + is your home for the very best in true-crime podcasts.
