01 - A Rhythm of Six

An author of ghost stories is excited to find his home is haunted. But the ghost doesn't take kindly to his guests. Case 26 was the first of my supernatural investigations to bear fruit. The first where I felt confident that there was no evidence that clearly disproved the subject's scary account. That this story might possibly be true. It’s hard to describe this kind of entity, whether it’s a restless spirit or a poltergeist. It’s most certainly malignant and may still represent a real and present danger to anyone who comes into contact with it.This a RE-RECORDED version of the orginal episode. I hope to re-record or remaster more of my early episodes soon. 02 - Wrong Number

She calls every night. The message is always the same – she needs to be rescued. But she may be dead already. Case 47 is a rarity in my supernatural archive. This is a horror story that ends with a little ray of hope, although there’s a still a great deal of terror to experience before you get there. Is this a case of fiction overtaking the facts? Only you can decide. I'm so happy I gave up my landline. 03 - Knock Down Ginger

A childish prank gets increasingly intense, putting a mother and her daughter in danger. Case 50 is a haunted house case that takes us out to the Cornish coast, where a young mother must protect herself and her daughter against a paranormal force that may be mischievous, but it presents a real danger to them both. 04 - The Black Clock

We discover why all the clocks in the clock museum stop at 4:30 every day. And it’s going to give a young boy the fright of his life. This spooky story is one of only a few historical horror stories in my archive. It takes place a century ago in a small village, and it could have its roots centuries earlier. It may appeal to fans of M.R. James due to its antiquarian setting, but unlike his classic ghost stories, this story may not be fiction. 05 - Another Face in the Crowd

In the midst of a mental breakdown, one man’s demons take on a terrifyingly real form. And they wait for him every day, at Liverpool Street Station. Some ghost stories cut to the bone more than others. This is a very personal story about someone in crisis. It's conceivable that what occurs is an extrapolation of that crisis, a kind of terrifying fantasy they’ve made in their mind. And that’s frightening enough. If what they’ve seen and experienced is real, and exists in the centre of London, then who knows how many victims there have been, and how many more could fall victim to this horror. 06 - The Call of the Sea

They met every summer. Their love for each other grew and grew. And then in a flash, it was all over. There is something gothic about the British seaside on a grey day, especially when it’s off-season. Case no. 70 is a slow-burner. There won’t be any jump scares early on in this episode. But the ending packs the kind of gut-punch that few uncanny tales do. 07 - After the Flood (Ghost story for Christmas)

His home is flooded. Christmas is ruined. Now a ghost from the past has returned, to remind him where it all went wrong. Our chilling ghost story for Christmas this year is about a man who has reached a crossroads in his life. It’s natural to be reflective in the festive season; another year is almost over, and we all find ourselves reconnecting with friends and family past and present. Some years, we may find ourselves thankful for all that we have. Some years we many look back with regret, and see only uncertainty ahead. Green Tea by Sheridan Le Fanu (BONUS #1)

Dr Hesselius, a practitioner of ‘metaphysical medicine’, relates the case of the Reverend Mr Jennings, a genial clergyman with a not-too-genial travelling companion. The Irish author Sheridan Le Fanu is one of the all-time great authors of ghostly tales and is cited as an influence by great supernatural authors such as M.R. James, Henry James, and E.F. Benson. A master of gothic atmosphere, his stories today are remarkable for their psychological dimensions, seeming almost Freudian in their probing of human behaviour. His creepy tales can also be surprisingly progressive. Some of his most famous stories deal with the interior lives of adolescent women, subtly hinting at their sexual development, and the injustices that the world enacts against them. 08 - Blind

He’s manipulative. He’s abusive. And he talks to himself in the dark. Will she leave him before he totally loses his grip? Injustice and guilt are behind many supernatural stories. Spirits from the past return to enact revenge on the living for horrific and evil acts in many classic tales. And even though these are scary stories, there’s something comforting about that. Because these stories are a kind of wish fulfilment. We hope that the cosmos can unleash retribution upon those who have acted against us and others. That no one ever really gets away with their crimes. Perhaps this true account proves that to be true. 09 - Studio Flat

Just four walls and one window. It’s cramped. It’s claustrophobic. And the view is absolutely terrifying. A lot of scary stories begin with someone moving into a haunted house. But as housing costs have risen, and our living spaces have gotten smaller, it was inevitable that the supernatural should occur in increasingly confined spaces. You might apply stone tape theory to a sinister case like this one. Where a traumatic event seems to have been recorded in a certain place, and is now replaying over and over again. 10 - When it Rains...

New job. New car. New penthouse apartment. Everything was awesome. Except for the dripping sound. And the figure in the bathtub. I try not to judge when I’m gathering these paranormal accounts. Even if someone has unappealing views, or worse, has performed horrible acts, my job is not to condemn. It’s simply to listen to their ghost story, scrutinise their account, and do my research. I leave it to you, the listener, to make your mind up about them, what has occurred, and whether any horrific consequences were deserved… If you'd like to support this true horror podcast, just visit Find more ghost story content on my Substack - a look at New Ghost Stories Volume Three -

A flash of lightning took everything from her. Now she walks through the storms, hoping to find what she lost. Our first Scottish ghost story is an epic gothic tale of love and loss. 12 - Noisy Neighbour

She could hear it through the walls. She couldn’t hear herself think. And that was just the beginning - it was about to get so much worse. We end the first season of the New Ghost Stories Podcast with a short, sharp shock. This true-life case is another ghost story about modern living conditions. Where we’re forced to live even closer together, and yet, we know less and less about the people who live around us. These uncanny accounts are only from one person’s perspective. Here there is a second unsettling story that is only hinted at. A story we will probably never know, even though as it played out, other people were only ever just a few feet away. The Monkey's Paw by W.W. Jacobs (BONUS #2)

"The first man had his three wishes. Yes," was the reply; "I don't know what the first two were, but the third was for death." A special treat to celebrate the first year of the podcast. For our second classic ghost story reading, we have an uncanny classic by W.W. Jacobs. Jacobs mostly wrote comedies, and has been praised for his well-observed and realistic depictions of working class characters. It’s a measure of the quality of his supernatural fiction, however, that their reputation has outgrown that of his other works. Down the Back of the Sofa (Shorts #2)

He tried to get the ball back. Now he seemed traumatised. What on earth did he find down there? The supernatural can come in all shapes and sizes. I’ve sometimes been reluctant to publish childhood paranormal cases, as our memories of being young are the most open to distortion. But I was able to prove that both brothers had been very consistent in their telling of their unexpected and unexplained story. So it’s presented here for your consideration. 16 - First Christmas On Her Own

Just because it's Grandma's first Christmas without Grandad, it doesn't mean that she's going to be spending it alone. It takes a very long time for me to research and prepare cases, and I’m always reluctant to rush the process. But when a Christmas ghost story came to my attention, I really felt like I had to take the opportunity to get it ready for the festive season. So this is a bit of an exclusive, this seasonal weird tale has never been published in any of my supernatural anthologies. Though I caution that this one is a bit stronger than one of those seasonal ‘pleasant terrors’. Number 13 by M.R. James (BONUS #4)

There is no room number 13 in the hotel. At least not during the day. At night, Herr Anderson's room seems smaller, and there is a strange wailing from next door. It was inevitable that I’d do a classic M.R. James story for the podcast eventually. Many people think of Dickens at Christmas, but for the dedicated ghost story aficionado, Montague Rhodes James comes first. 17 - The Hoarder

She couldn’t cope with things anymore. So she built a barrier. To keep the world out... and imprison herself within. Mental health is a recurring theme in my paranormal cases. It’s an open question as to whether the supernatural sometimes occurs because a fragile state allows us to perceive what we might otherwise be unable to, or because a fragile psyche is a place where advanced delusions can take place. It’s hard to be sure. This extraordinary tale of possession may seem too extreme to be believed. The one thing I can say for sure, is that for the subject, this ghost story was very real indeed. It was an accident. He didn't mean to. But the guy wants revenge. It's just a question of when. Case 160 is not one of my more typical supernatural cases. She was controlling, she was abusive. And even when she was gone, he still couldn’t escape her. If you’ve ever listened to someone who’s escaped an abusive relationship, you’ll hear them describe how the experience casts a shadow. The behaviour and threatening actions of an abusive partner can have a tangible, haunting effect that stays with a person for the rest of their life. It should be no surprise that there are supernatural accounts where that haunting effect manifests into a terrifyingly real form. She was the girl of his dreams. She went with him into the forest. Nothing was ever the same again. If there was ever a case that proved the saying ‘Be careful what you wish for’... There’s a lot that’s scary about this bizarre and unexplained series of events. But the thing that I’ve always found most creepy and unsettling about this case, is that there are a lot of people involved. She saw him amongst the foxes. She became obsessed by him. And how she could escape her horrible life at home. Season two of the podcast ends on an epic note, with this extended two-part supernatural story. This real account covers more years I think than any other in my archive of modern horror stories. It’s a reminder that ghosts don’t hide in obscure places, in old haunted houses, or historical ruins. They are all around us. They’re the people who slip through the cracks. The Voice in the Night by William Hope Hodgson (BONUS #5)

“We have spoken together upon that which—which has befallen us. We had thought to go out, without telling anyone of the terror which has come into our—lives. She is with me in believing that tonight’s happenings are under a special ruling, and that it is God’s wish that we should tell to you all that we have suffered since—since—”William Hope Hodgson may not be a name that's not as well known as some supernatural storytellers, but his weird works are very influential. His book The House on the Borderland was one of the earliest works of cosmic horror and was cited as favourite by Lovecraft. His story The Night Land has been cited as early entry into the dying earth sub-genre. Hodgson led a fascinating and varied life (he once feuded with Houdini) and The Voice in the Night draws on his early years as a sailor. If you'd like to support this scary supernatural podcast, just visit more frightening content on my Substack - out the New Ghost Stories books -

The Body Snatcher by Robert Louis Stevenson (BONUS #6)

“… When subjects were scarce the pair would drive far into the country in Macfarlane's gig, visit and desecrate some lonely graveyard, and return before dawn with their booty to the door of the dissecting-room.” This time for our New Year’s bonus classic ghost story, I’m reading Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Body Snatcher. This creepy gothic tale was inspired the famous Burke and Hare case, and the non-conformist libertine streak exhibited by one of the leads seems to lay the way for the famous horror story Stevenson would write just two years later.Patrons help to keep this British horror podcast going. It was a routine operation. She didn’t think she’d have to stay overnight. With strange sounds on the ward. And something hiding behind the curtain. He needs to prove he can be a responsible parent. Provide a good home for his family. If he could only do something about the damp… Case no 288 is amongst the most upsetting of the stories that have featured on this real life horror podcast to date. We’ve had real supernatural cases before where the pressures of parenthood have led to horrible outcomes. It’s not her battle, but it doesn’t matter. A score needs to be settled. And the only way to get her life back is to fight.- One of the many things that fascinates me about these real-life horror stories is how people come to live with what has happened to them. Regardless of how chilling or traumatising an experience may have been, you’ve still got to go home afterwards, do the shopping, answer your emails. The extraordinary and the ordinary end up living side by side. Terrifying, life-changing events are tempered by the comfortable, frustrating sense that everything must inevitably, somehow go back to normal.Patrons help to keep this English gothic podcast going. Man-Size in Marble by Edith Nesbit (Bonus 7)

"They do say, as on All Saints' Eve them two bodies sits up on their slabs, and gets off of them, and then walks down the aisle, in their marble" Many old ghost stories have the reputation of being cosy. Stories to tell around the fireside to provide listeners with a pleasant terror. One of the surprises about Edith Nesbit’s stories – an author, let’s not forget, famous for her children’s classics – is that they don’t hold back. Her stories aren’t guided by a Victorian sense of justice and morality, of righting wrongs and punishing hubris. Innocent people get hurt; happy couples are torn apart. Her stories are written not just to offer chills but to deliver a shocking blow at their climax.Patrons help to keep this UK horror podcast going. Mrs Amworth by E.F. Benson (Bonus 8)

"Yes, you did well to awake," he said. "That warning came from your subconscious self, which never wholly slumbers, and cried out to you of deadly danger. For two reasons, then, you must help me: one to save others, the second to save yourself."While M.R. James may lay claim to being the most influential of the classic ghost story writers, E.F. Benson is by far the most prolific. He penned more than 50 of what he called 'spook stories', and like James, his gothic tales also tend to centre on bachelors, who have the time to indulge their interests, usually to their detriment. Unlike James, however, his creepy tales can take place in society rather than in isolated churches or libraries. And he tends to place his tongue firmly in cheek.Hear the extra bonus story at - help to keep this gothic podcast going. 34 - Clean Me

A crime has been committed. A guilty man has been identified. But will the punishment fit the crime? Many a ghost story revolves around acts of injustice. An act of evil is committed, and then a terrifying, chilling act of supernatural vengeance is enacted to right it. But justice is a slippery thing. We may revel in seeing an act of revenge be carried out, but are we forgetting to ask whether that revenge is appropriate? Did the victim really deserve what happened to them?Hear the extra bonus ghost story at - help to keep this English gothic podcast going. 35 - How I Ruined Christmas

It’s the season of good will. Everyone’s supposed to get along. And not get into arguments. Or settle old scores… Revenge is a dish best served sweet in this year’s ghost story for Christmas. There is something wonderful about the festive season, the way it helps us to renew connections with the people we care about. But connections can come with baggage. And when it’s family, love can often be tinged with hate. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and hope yours doesn’t become as strange and frightening as this one.Patrons help to keep this English gothic podcast going.
