Sir Wayne Smith on All Blacks Career & Culture, Black Ferns, Future of Rugby (Re-Release)

This week o we’re re-releasing one of our favourite episodes with Sir Wayne Smith.Smithy is one of the most respected and accomplished figures in New Zealand Rugby history – an absolute legend of the game.He was a 17-cap All Black who went on to win three World Cups - two as All Blacks assistant coach, and one with the Black Ferns. He’s also been the All Blacks coach, won four Super Rugby titles as a coach, two with the Crusaders and two with the Chiefs. In this episode we talk about the differences between coaching men and women, what rule changes he’d like to see in the game, why he was sacked as All Blacks coach and the hardest moments of his career in 2007, his fairy tale ride with the Black Ferns, where his resilience comes from and much, much more. There’s a reason Wayne is considered one of world rugby’s greatest thinkers, and this was a fascinating insight into how his brain works. Coach of the Decade: Gordon Walker on Coaching Lisa Carrington & K4 Olympic Gold

He’s won the Halberg Coach of the Year award six times and in 2021 was crowned the Halberg coach of the decade – and after listening to this you’ll understand why. This was a really special episode. Dame Sarai Bareman: Samoan Kiwi and FIFA Chief of Women’s Football, Eugene Bareman’s Success & More! (Re-Release)

This week on Between Two Beers we're re-releasing one of our favourite all time episodes with Dame Sarai Bareman which was recorded on the morning of the FIFA Women's World Cup semi-final in Auckland in August 2023.Sarai is one of the most powerful and influential women in world sport and has been FIFA’s Chief Women’s Football Officer since the role was first created in 2016.Her mandate included doubling the sport's global female player base from 30 million to 60 million and she's ultimately responsible for all levels of the game – from grassroots through to elite international competition – across 200 countries, it's quite a big gig!In this episode we talk about her relationship with her brother, UFC superstar coach Eugene Bareman – and their humble beginnings, how she worked her way up from a bank teller in West Auckland to the biggest job in women’s football, the misogyny, corruption and abuse she encountered along the way and all the best ‘pinch yourself’ moments from her epic rise including the chaos and stress caused by the Auckland shootings on the morning of the opening match of the World Cup in New ZealandThis one was pretty special – and after making it to the end – you'll be able to see why Sarai holds the position she does. She’s sharp, articulate, empathetic and perhaps most importantly, authentic. There’s no FIFA talking points in this one, it’s Sarai Bareman as you’ve never heard her before. It made Sophie wonder - if nine Kiwi women are diagnosed with breast cancer every single day, why aren’t we having more conversations that include the men in their lives? So she did something about it – and created an epic event in Christchurch that brings it all together - the Tits and Tees Tournament. It involves 18 holes of golf, beers and lunch. Last year she raised $45,000 for the Beast Cancer Foundation, and this year the goal is 50k!We think it's a brilliant concept and Sophie is a legend that needs your support...Check it out here: Hosted on Acast. Joe Daymond: From Homeless to Star Comedian, Performing with Theo Von & The Power of Social Media

Joe Daymond is one of New Zealand’s best and funniest comedians who shot to fame during lockdown with his snackable social media vids. He’s now an award-winning comedian, actor, director and producer who has sold out national tours across both New Zealand & Australia. In this episode we talk about his fast rise through the NZ comedy scene, why he lived out of his car for months, becoming the youngest Kiwi comedian to sell-out Sky City Theatre – and why it may have happened too quickly, dealing with success, coping with criticism, performing with Theo Von and meeting Dave Chappelle, finding balance at home and what the future looks like.Joe is hilarious, but he also has incredible depth. Dr Alia Bojilova: Ex-NZ SAS Psychologist on Surviving Kidnapping in Syria & Resilience Tools

Strap in for this one, because Dr. Alia Bojilova is one of the most impressive guests we’ve had on the show. She moved to New Zealand from Bulgaria as a 17-year-old who didn’t speak a word of English but soon became the lead psychologist for the New Zealand SAS.After leaving the military she embarked on a PhD, focusing on the concept of resilience and is now a world leader in the field, working with some of the biggest names, companies and athletes in the world. In 2013, Alia was working as a United Nations military observer in Syria when she and two colleagues were kidnapped by rebel fighters, held at gunpoint and told they were going to be decapitated on camera. In this chat Alia explains why she and her colleagues were held hostage, how they managed to negotiate their release using the skills she’d developed with the SAS.Alia is also married to former guest Jamie Pennell – who you might remember from our episode last year – as the SAS solider who won NZ’s second highest military honor – the Gallantry Star. This was such an epic chat, and Alia’s story, her insight and the way she holds herself – will blow you away. We're also stoked to tell you about the business we've built. “I’m Calling You Out!” - Business Coach Di Foster Give Us a Brutal Reality Check (Accidental Business Owners #13)

Welcome to the latest episode of Accidental Business Owners. This is a show we ran last year on our Business in Between channel – but this year we’re bringing it onto our main feed. The premise of the show is that last year Steve and Seamus became fulltime business owners. We left our 9-5s to go all in on Between Two Beers – and thought it would be interesting to document our journey.Last year we started working with a business and mindset coach Di Foster, who you might remember as a guest on the podcast and quickly realized she was the perfect foil to help them work through all the highs and lows of being a business owner. We recorded 12 episodes of Accidental Business Owners – and this was our last recording of 2024.It was recorded on a Saturday morning in mid-December – the day after a half-day strategic meeting with Di and our accountant Matt Hinton - at the end after our busiest week of the year. So it’s fair to say tensions and emotions were delicately poised – as we tried to chart a path to success in 2025 across our podcast, B2B Speakers and B2B Reflections. This episode is a bit of a ride, and pretty raw, but we’re really excited to show more of what’s happening behind the scenes with us in 2025.Hang in there for Di’s big serve at the end, when she thought the mics were off.Enjoy. Mark Stafford: 20 Years at the TAB, Surviving Tragic Car Crash, MS Diagnosis & Testicular Cancer (Re-Release)

We kick off Between Two Beers in 2025 by re-releasing one of our favourite episodes of 2024 - with Mark Stafford. This ep is really special. There's just so much goodness in here.Staffy is a radio host, who is best known as the former face of the TAB, where he spent two decades as a bookmaker and broadcaster. But what's not so well-known is his roller-coaster ride through life with all its twists and turns. In this episode we talk about how he died in a car accident, before being brought back to life, beating cancer, getting diagnosed with MS and found his way to the TAB. He shares his best match-fixing stories, we talk about the legend of Steel Balls and all the most incredible yarns from being NZ's premier oddsmaker. We also talk about the devastating year of 2020, where he lost his job, his sister and his best friend in a short period of time. How he built himself back up, the friendships and lessons he leaned on and his reflections towards the end of this one - make it one of the greats.Staffy is such a lovely bloke, who's been through it all. He was incredibly candid and raw in this chat, and when you mix that up with being one of the best storytellers in NZ, made it one of our favs. We're also super stoked to have Staffy on the books of B2B Speakers, so if you’d like him to MC your night, or share his story at your function or event, flick us a message by going to www.b2bspeakers.co.nz.Also check out our epic lineup of former guests available for hire too.
